Home Energy Ratings Raised to 6-Star Minimum

Home energy efficiency standards around the country are in the process of being upgraded as governments mandate greener households. The current Home Energy Efficiency rating of 5-Star in many states is being upgraded to a more stringent 6-star standard. The current system ranks the energy efficiency of the heating and cooling ability of homes from 1 to 10 stars.

Queensland has become the first state to introduce the changes at the start of the month. South Australia will follow suit in September, and Victoria will introduce the regulations next year. The new standards place more emphasis on efficient glazing and insulated walls.

According to the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors, if every home in Australia were to comply with the 6-Star standard, the nation’s energy bill would be reduced by 10 percent.
